The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
