Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
